Among famous black U.S. players is Eddie Pope, who played on the U.S. Men¡¯s National team for 11 years, beginning in 1998. Pope is tied with two other players for the most World Cup qualifying appearances of 31 matches. He also played for 11 years in professional soccer and was an all-star four times and a Major League Soccer champion three times.
Born in Minneapolis in 1971, Briana Scurry was the top college women¡¯s soccer goalkeeper while at the University of Massachusetts. She went on to play as the goalkeeper on the U.S. Women¡¯s World Cup team from 1992 until 2004, helping the team win two gold medals and the 1999 title, where fans remember her dramatic save during a penalty kick by China. Scurry also played in the Olympic Games and in professional soccer until she retired in 2010.

That led to numerous Indian companies selling generic versions of drugs made in the United States. Beginning with the Patents Act of 2005, India agreed to conform to guidelines set forth by the World Trade Organization regarding drug patents, but many provisions of the 2005 act still made it possible for the country to produce generic drugs. One provision is that drugs patented before 1995 were not protected, so generic drugs for hair loss are still being manufactured.
Finasteride is the active ingredient in Propecia, which is the best-selling prescription drug for hair loss. Merck, the manufacturer of Propecia, claims that 90 percent of men either regrew hair or suffered no additional hair loss after five years of treatment. There are several generic versions of Propecia available from Indian manufacturers. Cipla markets its 1 mg finasteride tablets under the name Finpecia, while Dr. Reddy¡¯s Laboratories sells its 1 mg finasteride tablets under the name Finax. Both companies also make 5 mg tablets of finasteride and suggest splitting the tablets into four parts to save money. Cipla¡¯s 5 mg tablet is called Fincar, and Dr. Reddy¡¯s is Finast. Another Indian company, Samarth Pharma, sells a 5 mg finasteride tablet called Fistide.
Dutasteride is not an approved by the FDA for hair loss, but some studies have shown it to be more effective than finasteride in treating male pattern baldness. A study that appeared in the June 2006 issue of the “Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology” concluded the dutasteride was more effective than finasteride after 12 weeks and 24 weeks. Dutasteride is sold under the name Avodart in the U.S. and is made by several Indian companies, including Dr. Reddy¡¯s, which sells .5 mg tablets as Dutas, and Cipla, which manufactures Duprost. Ranbaxy also markets .5 mg dutasteride tablets as Dutagen.
Since the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, or FDA, does not regulate generic drugs manufactured in India, safety and effectiveness are a concern. In the past, the FDA has issued warnings to Indian drug manufacturers such as Ranbaxy for poor quality control and manufacturing practices. In the classic little league baseball film “The Bad News Bears,” a reluctant coach learns just before the season starts he has to come up with team uniforms. In the real world, that sponsorship might stir some discussion, but Little League uniform rules are mostly concerned with an unified look and player safety.
According to the official Little League Rulebook, “Every member of the team must wear a conventional uniform which includes shirt, pants, stockings and cap. This may be a regular season uniform.” Typically, umpires will be lenient in terms of every member of the team matching exactly. However, as teams advance into postseason play, umpires reserve the right to disqualify any player wearing a uniform unlike his teammates.
The rulebook states that every team must provide at least six NOCSAE (National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment) approved batting helmets. All batters, runners and player-base coaches must wear helmets at all times. Players can bring their own batting helmets, but they must be NOCSAE approved with a warning label in sight. All players must wear an athletic supporter with a cup as well.
Catchers have to play in NOCSAE certified helmets, chest protectors and knee protectors. Chest protectors must cover the entire torso as high as the lower neck and as low as the abdomen. A throat guard, the type that dangles from the helmet, is also required. As of 2013, Little League catchers aren’t allowed to wear the two-piece style helmets worn by players at higher levels. Catcher’s cups must also be made of either metal, carbon fibre or plastic.
Due to safety risks, players can’t wear metal cleats. The Little League suggests rubber cleats, but any non-metal athletic shoes are technically legal. Once players move to a large field size (from 46 to 60 foot mounds and from 60 to 90 foot base paths), most leagues allow them to wear metal spikes.

To address player safety, the National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment. known as NOCSAE, began in 1969. Part of the NOSCSAE¡¯s focus was on testing and regulating helmet padding. This resulted in padding placement inside football helmets and on the type of padding used at each location.
Your helmet is a combination of components designed to work together in protecting you while playing football. Although it might not seem like padding, a helmet¡¯s hard, polycarbonate shell is the external padding that provides immediate protection against any hard objects you might encounter on the field. Attached to the shell is stiff expanded foam that cushions the entirety of your head. Throughout the expanded foam is additional padding of different stiffness. All this protection hides under a comfortable foam liner. Other components include a face mask, and in some helmets, an inner air liner.
The largest section of helmet padding is stiff polypropylene foam that nearly covers the entire internal surface of the helmet. Its main role is to absorb impacts and provide general protection.
